What is Proventil?

Proventil (active substance Albuterol) is a bronchodilator from the group of β₂-adrenoreceptor selective agonists. The agent relaxes the muscles of the respiratory tract and increases the flow of air into the patient’s lungs. Albuterol predominantly acts on beta2-receptors, which predominate in the smooth muscles of the bronchi (breathing tubes). The drug is used to treat or prevent bronchospasm in people with reversible obstructive respiratory disease. Indications for use include prevention and relief of bronchospasm in bronchial asthma, symptomatic treatment of broncho-obstructive syndrome (chronic bronchitis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, etc.), nocturnal asthma (prolonged tablet form), prevention of preterm labor. The inhaler is intended for use by adults and children over 4 years of age. It is recommended to clean the inhaler before the first use and in cases when the inhaler has not been used for more than 2 weeks. This medicine does not contain chlorofluorocarbons.

How does Proventil work?

In therapeutic doses, Albuterol has a pronounced stimulating effect on the beta2-adrenoreceptors of the bronchi, blood vessels and myometrium. The substance inhibits the release of fat cells from histamine, leukotrienes, PgD2 and other biologically active substances for a long time; suppresses early and late bronchial reactivity. It has a pronounced bronchodilator effect, preventing or arresting spasms of the bronchi, reduces resistance in the airways, increases the VC. Positive effect on mucociliary clearance (with chronic bronchitis increases it by 36%), stimulates the secretion of mucus, activates the function of ciliated epithelium. It inhibits the release of inflammatory mediators from mast cells and basophils, in particular, anti-IgE-induced release of histamine, eliminates antigen-dependent suppression of mucociliary transport and the release of neutrophil chemotaxis. Albuterol prevents the development of allergen-induced bronchospasm, may cause a decrease in the number of beta-adrenergic receptors, including on lymphocytes. It has a number of metabolic effects: it reduces the concentration of K + in plasma, affects glycogenolysis and insulin secretion, has hyperglycemic (especially in patients with bronchial asthma) and lipolytic effect, increases the risk of acidosis. The drug causes the expansion of the coronary arteries, has a tocolytic effect – reduces the tone and contractile activity of the myometrium. Proventil starts to work within 30 minutes, the maximum effect is registered in 2 hours. The duration is about 4-6 hours.

How to use Proventil?

Use albuterol in dosages recommended by your doctor. Do not use the medicine for longer than recommended. Shake your inhaler immediately before each use of the drug. The aerosol contains 200 inhalations per canister. Each inhalation delivers 108 mcg of albuterol sulfate. The usual dose of Proventil is 2 inhalations every 4 to 6 hours. In this case, the effect lasts about 4 to 6 hours. The medication should be stored at room temperature away from moisture, heat, or low temperatures. Keep the inhaler away from open flame or high temperatures. If the medicine gets into your eyes, immediately rinse them with plenty of water. The drug should not be used more often than recommended. Never increase the dose or frequency of use without consulting a doctor.

Side effects

Proventil can cause the following side effects: shortness of breath, choking, other breathing problems, chest pain, fast heart rate, pain or burning when urinating, high blood sugar, increased thirst, frequent urination, hunger, dry mouth, sweet smell when breathing, drowsiness, dry skin, blurred vision, weight loss, low potassium, leg cramps, constipation, irregular heartbeat, back pain, body pain, headache, dizziness, nervousness, nausea, diarrhea, indigestion, sore throat, sinus pain, runny nose.

Also, minor side effects may occur, including dizziness, increased body temperature, irritability, nausea, redness of the face, neck, upper chest, insomnia, urination problem, trouble sleeping, drowsiness.

Proventil is generally well tolerated by patients, and all side effects are quite consistent with its pharmacological activity. In general, the severity of these side effects depends on the dose and the route of administration. With further treatment, some side effects may disappear, as your body adapts to the drug.

Contraindications

You should not use this medicine if you are allergic to albuterol. Also, you should not use the inhaler if you are allergic to milk proteins.

Before you buy Proventil online, tell your doctor if you have previously had heart disease, high blood pressure, heart failure, heart rhythm disorder, epilepsy or diabetes, thyroid disease, low levels of potassium in the blood.

Safety precautions

Frequent use of the medication can lead to increased bronchospasm, sudden death, and therefore it is necessary to take breaks between doses (at least 6 hours). These intervals can be reduced only in exceptional cases. If it’s necessary to use this drug during lactation, you should be cautious (it is not known whether albuterol penetrates into breast milk). There are no strictly controlled clinical studies on the teratogenicity of albuterol. The bronchodilator can be used during pregnancy since the potential risk of placental hypoxemia for the fetus against the background of uncontrolled asthma greatly exceeds the risk associated with its use. However, caution should be exercised when using Proventil during pregnancy, as it can cause tachycardia and hyperglycemia in the mother (especially in the presence of diabetes) and fetus, and can also delay labor, reduce blood pressure. Do not use Albuterol together with CNS stimulants, digoxin, antihypertensive and antianginal drugs, xanthines, inhalation anesthesia, MAO inhibitors and tricyclic antidepressants, non-selective beta-blockers, anticholinergics, diuretics and GCS.

Special instructions

Before increasing the dose, be sure to consult your doctor. The medication is also used to prevent breathing difficulties during exercise, it is usually used 15 to 30 minutes before exercise. The process of burning fat occurs due to the interaction of the components of the drug with beta-2 receptors. When albuterol begins to affect them, body temperature rises. The increased temperature will speed up the metabolic processes.

This drug is used as a thermogenic agent. In order for the drug to work and burn excess body fat, you need to follow a certain diet. The most significant result will be noticed in those who do not suffer from overweight problems. You must remember that this bronchodilator can be taken only for a short period of time, as the body gets used to the drug very quickly. Therefore, if you suffer from obesity, then it makes sense to start taking albuterol only after you lose weight to the optimum weight.
