What is Ventolin inhaler?

Ventolin is a bronchodilator used in the treatment of bronchial asthma at its different stages. The active component of Ventolin is salbutamol (also known as albuterol). Today, this medication is the “gold standard” for the relief of asthma attacks. The inhaler is used to relieve symptoms of bronchial asthma, prevent bronchospasm attacks associated with exposure to an allergen or caused by exercise, for long-term maintenance therapy of bronchial asthma. The medication is also used in other chronic lung diseases associated with reversible airway obstruction, including chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), chronic bronchitis, pulmonary emphysema.

How does it work?

Salbutamol has a strong bronchodilatory effect, preventing or completely eliminating bronchospasm and reducing resistance in the respiratory tract. There is no negative effect on the heart and blood vessels. The substance increases the lumen of the coronary vessels, increases blood glucose levels, has a fat burning effect. The drug begins to act within 5 minutes after inhalation and reaches a peak of activity in 0.5-1.5 hours. Duration of action is 4-6 hours. The lower part of the respiratory tract reaches only 10-20% of the administered dose.

Instructions for use and dosage

Ventolin is used only for inhalation.

The recommended dose for the relief of bronchospasm in adults is 100 or 200 mcg; children – 100 mcg, if necessary, the dose can be increased to 200 mcg. It is not recommended to use the inhaler more often than 4 times a day. The need for frequent use of maximum doses of the drug or in a sudden increase in the dose indicates a worsening course of asthma.

To prevent attacks of bronchospasm associated with exposure to an allergen or caused by exercise, adults need to receive 200 mcg 10-15 minutes before exposure to a provoking factor or load; children – 100 mcg 10-15 minutes before exposure to a provoking factor or load; if necessary, the dose can be increased to 200 mcg.

Adults who need prolonged maintenance therapy should receive up to 200 mcg 4 times a day; children – up to 200 mcg 4 times a day.

The mode of application and dosage regimen are specified in the instructions for use. In general, the total daily dose of albuterol should not exceed 8-10 inhalations. In case of insufficient effect, the treatment plan should be revised. The use of spacers increases the efficiency of use. Before you buy Ventolin inhaler, you need to consult a doctor.

To make an inhalation, remove the protective cap from the inhaler mouthpiece, make sure the mouthpiece is clean and dry, shake the inhaler, place it vertically between the thumb and forefinger, placing the thumb on the base, below the mouthpiece. Make a deep exhale. Then put the mouthpiece between the teeth and clasp lips. Take a deep breath through your mouth and at the same time press the top of the inhaler. Hold your breath, take the inhaler out of your mouth and remove your index finger from the top of the inhaler. Continue to hold your breath as long as you can. If it is necessary to continue inhalation, you should wait about half a minute, holding the inhaler vertically, and then repeat steps 2 through 6. After inhalation, put a dust cap on the mouthpiece.
